🧬 What Is Cirrhosis?

Cirrhosis is scarring of the liver that happens over time due to damage from conditions like fatty liver, hepatitis B/C, alcohol, or autoimmune disease.

Because symptoms often appear late, blood tests are crucial for early detection, monitoring, and treatment planning.

🔍 Key Blood Tests to Diagnose & Monitor Cirrhosis:

1. Liver Function Tests (LFTs)

Checks how well your liver is working.

  • ALT & AST – Show liver cell damage

  • ALP & GGT – Elevated in bile duct-related disease

  • Bilirubin – High levels can cause jaundice

  • Albumin – Low levels may indicate poor liver function

  • INR (Prothrombin Time) – Indicates how well your liver makes clotting proteins

2. Complete Blood Count (CBC)

  • Low platelets (thrombocytopenia) may suggest portal hypertension

  • Anemia or low WBCs may signal advanced disease or complications

3. Kidney Function Tests (Urea, Creatinine)

  • Important to assess liver-kidney interactions, especially in late-stage cirrhosis

4. Ammonia Levels

  • Elevated in hepatic encephalopathy (confusion due to liver’s failure to detoxify)

5. Electrolytes (Sodium, Potassium)

  • Sodium often drops in advanced cirrhosis (hyponatremia)

  • Helps guide fluid and diuretic management

6. Viral Hepatitis Panel (HBsAg, Anti-HCV)

  • Identifies underlying viral causes

7. Autoimmune Panel (ANA, ASMA, AMA)

  • Useful if autoimmune hepatitis or PBC is suspected

8. Serum Ferritin / Ceruloplasmin / Alpha-1 Antitrypsin

  • Checks for genetic/metabolic causes like Hemochromatosis, Wilson’s Disease

📈 Advanced Non-Invasive Scores Using Blood Tests

Name Use
Child-Pugh Score Predicts cirrhosis severity
MELD Score Used for transplant priority
Fib-4 Index / APRI Score Estimates fibrosis level from blood data

🩺 Dr. Chetan Kalal’s Expert Advice:

"Many patients feel okay, but cirrhosis may silently progress. These blood tests can help catch the disease early, monitor it effectively, and even guide when a liver transplant may be needed."
