What is Liver Cirrhosis?
Liver Cirrhosis is the end-stage of chronic liver disease — where healthy liver cells are replaced by scar tissue (fibrosis), making the liver hard, shrunken, and unable to function properly.
But the real danger of cirrhosis lies in its life-threatening complications.
Top Complications of Liver Cirrhosis Every Patient Should Know
"Cirrhosis is a silent killer — but its complications give us warning signs. Timely treatment can prevent liver failure or transplant."
— Dr. Chetan Kalal
1. Ascites (Fluid in the Abdomen)
Most common complication of cirrhosis
Abdomen becomes swollen and tight
Risk of infection (SBP — Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis)
Salt restriction & diuretics are main treatment
2. Variceal Bleeding (Vomiting Blood)
Cirrhosis causes high pressure in the portal vein (portal hypertension)
Can lead to rupture of food pipe (esophageal) or stomach veins (varices)
Massive vomiting of blood
Life-threatening emergency needing endoscopy & banding
3. Hepatic Encephalopathy (HE)
Toxin buildup (especially ammonia) affects brain function
Symptoms: confusion, forgetfulness, drowsiness, tremors
In severe cases — coma
Lactulose syrup & protein management help
4. Jaundice
Yellow eyes & skin
Sign of worsening liver function
Indicates liver cells are failing
5. Hepatorenal Syndrome (HRS)
Kidney failure due to advanced liver disease
Needs ICU care and sometimes dialysis
Indicates poor prognosis
6. Hepatopulmonary Syndrome / Portal Pulmonary Hypertension
Breathing difficulty due to liver-induced lung changes
Oxygen requirement increases
7. Liver Cancer (Hepatocellular Carcinoma — HCC)
Cirrhosis patients are at high risk of liver cancer
Requires regular ultrasound and AFP monitoring
Early detection is critical for cure
8. Muscle Wasting & Malnutrition
Loss of muscle mass (Sarcopenia)
Poor appetite & weakness
Requires nutritional therapy & specialised diet plan
9. Coagulopathy (Bleeding Tendency)
Liver cannot produce clotting factors
Risk of spontaneous bleeding
10. Infections
Cirrhosis patients have low immunity
Prone to chest infections, urine infections, or abdominal infection (SBP)
