Diet in Cirrhosis — The Healing Power of Food for Your Liver

Diet in Cirrhosis — The Healing Power of Food for Your Liver

Expert Advice from Dr. Chetan Kalal — Maharashtra’s First DM Hepatologist

Why is Diet So Important in Cirrhosis?

"Cirrhosis is not just a liver disease — it's a nutrition disease too," says Dr. Chetan Kalal.

The damaged liver struggles to handle nutrients, proteins, salts, and fats. What you eat — and what you avoid — can make a huge difference in symptoms, complications, and survival.

Dr. Chetan Kalal’s Golden Rule:

"Nutrition is Medicine for the Liver. Every bite should heal — not harm."

What Should Cirrhosis Patients Eat?

1. High-Protein Diet

Liver patients often lose muscle (sarcopenia). Protein helps prevent weakness.

  • Include:

    • Moong dal, dalia, eggs (if non-veg allowed), paneer, curd

    • Soya, legumes, pulses

    • Protein supplements if advised

2. Small Frequent Meals

Avoid long gaps between meals — liver cannot handle fasting stress.

"Early morning snack and bedtime snack prevent catabolism in cirrhosis."

3. Salt Restriction (For Ascites or Swelling)

Too much salt causes fluid accumulation.

  • Limit salt intake to 2g per day if advised

  • Avoid papad, pickles, processed foods, chips

4. Carbohydrates Are Important

Energy-giving foods like rice, chapati, fruits, and vegetables are essential.

5. Fluid Restriction

Only if advised in cases of severe ascites or hyponatremia (low sodium).

Foods to Avoid in Cirrhosis:

  • Fried foods, junk food

  • Raw seafood (risk of infection)

  • Alcohol (strictly prohibited)

  • Sugary drinks or sodas

  • Processed meats (high sodium)

  • Herbal or over-the-counter liver tonics without prescription

Special Focus by Dr. Chetan Kalal:

"Every cirrhosis patient deserves a personalised diet plan — based on liver function, nutritional status, fluid balance, and protein tolerance."
