By Dr. Chetan Kalal — First DM Hepatologist of Maharashtra
Fatty Liver is Not Just About Fat — It's About Wrong Food Choices
Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), now called Metabolic-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD), is the new-age lifestyle liver disease.
Dr. Chetan Kalal — leading liver specialist from Mumbai — says:
"Your kitchen is your first line of treatment in fatty liver. Medicines come later."
What Happens in NAFLD / MAFLD?
Excess fat gets deposited in liver cells.
The liver becomes inflamed, stiff, or scarred over time.
Linked to obesity, diabetes, cholesterol, PCOS, thyroid, and sedentary life.
What Not to Eat in Fatty Liver Disease?
1. Sugar is Your Liver’s Enemy No. 1
Avoid sugary drinks (soda, packaged juices, energy drinks)
Limit sweets, cakes, biscuits, mithai
Beware of hidden sugars in ketchup, packaged food
Remember: Even "jaggery", "honey", and "natural sugars" can harm if overused.
2. Refined Carbs — White Poison for Liver
Say no to maida (white flour)
Cut down on white bread, pizza, bakery items
Avoid over-polished rice
3. Saturated Fats — Feed Fat to Fatty Liver
Limit fried food, chips, namkeen, pakoras
Restrict ghee, butter, full cream milk (unless advised by dietitian)
Avoid fatty red meats
4. Alcohol — Even Small Amounts are Risky
Even if it’s called Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver — alcohol adds double damage.
Complete avoidance is best.
What To Eat for Fatty Liver Reversal?
1. High Fibre, Plant-Based Diet
Include whole grains (millets, brown rice, oats)
Eat colourful veggies (cruciferous, leafy greens)
Choose seasonal fruits in moderation
2. Quality Proteins — Liver Loves It
Dals, legumes, sprouts
Eggs (boiled or poached)
Tofu, paneer (low-fat), fish, chicken (grilled, steamed)
3. Healthy Fats in Small Amounts
Nuts (almonds, walnuts, pistachios)
Seeds (flaxseed, chia, sunflower)
Cold-pressed oils (olive oil, mustard oil)
4. Hydration & Detox
Plain water — best liver cleanser
Green tea (without sugar)
Black coffee (1-2 cups if no acidity)
Lemon water or infused water
What About Fruits in Fatty Liver?
→ Yes, but in controlled portions (1-2 servings/day)
Best Fruits:
Apple, papaya, guava, pear, kiwi, berries
Limit:
Banana, mango, grapes (due to higher sugar content)
Avoid:
Fruit juices, canned fruits, or excess dried fruits
Lifestyle is the Real Medicine in Fatty Liver
Dr. Chetan Kalal’s 3 Golden Rules:
Early Dinner (by 8 PM)
10,000 steps daily or 45 mins of brisk walking
80% of your plate should be natural, unprocessed food
Final Take-Home from Dr. Chetan Kalal:
"Fatty Liver is a silent warning from your body — correct your food habits before it turns into irreversible liver damage."
"Eat local. Eat seasonal. Eat mindfully."
