Alcohol & Liver Health – What You Should Know Before It’s Too Late
By Dr. Chetan Kalal, Consultant Hepatologist & Liver Transplant Physician
Why Your Liver Suffers Silently
Your liver is the body’s detox powerhouse — it processes everything you consume, including alcohol. While it can handle small quantities of alcohol, excessive or regular drinking overwhelms it, leading to progressive damage.
Most people don’t realize that alcohol-related liver disease (ARLD) doesn’t show symptoms until it’s advanced — making awareness and early action crucial.
🚨 What Alcohol Really Does to Your Liver
Fatty Liver (Steatosis) – The first and often reversible stage. Even a few drinks a day can cause fat to accumulate in liver cells.
✅ Good news: This can be reversed with timely alcohol abstinence and diet changes.Alcoholic Hepatitis – Inflammation of the liver due to prolonged alcohol use. It can range from mild to life-threatening.
⚠️ Signs include: jaundice, abdominal pain, vomiting, and loss of appetite.Cirrhosis – Permanent scarring of the liver. At this stage, damage is irreversible, and the risk of liver failure and liver cancer increases significantly.
🍺 How Much Is Too Much?
There’s no safe level of alcohol for liver health, but guidelines say:
Men: No more than 2 standard drinks/day
Women: No more than 1 standard drink/day
But remember: Regular consumption — even within “limits” — can still cause damage over time, especially when combined with poor diet, stress, and other liver conditions.
🧠 Myths vs. Facts
❌ Myth: Only heavy drinkers get liver disease
✅ Fact: Even social drinking, especially in the presence of metabolic risk (obesity, diabetes), can lead to liver issues.
❌ Myth: Liver damage is permanent
✅ Fact: In early stages (fatty liver), it is often reversible with timely intervention.
🩺 What You Should Do
Get Liver Function Tests (LFTs) yearly if you drink regularly
Consider a FibroScan – a non-invasive scan that detects early liver stiffness or fatty changes
Take alcohol-free breaks (like Dry January) and monitor how your body responds
Don’t mix alcohol with painkillers, certain antibiotics, or herbal supplements
🧘 Proactive Liver Care Tips
Drink plenty of water to help flush toxins
Eat a liver-friendly diet – rich in fiber, antioxidants, and healthy fats
Maintain a healthy weight – obesity increases the risk of alcohol-induced liver damage
Seek help for alcohol dependence – early support can prevent irreversible liver damage
⚠️ When to See a Liver Specialist
Book an appointment if you experience:
Fatigue, abdominal bloating, yellowing of the eyes/skin
Nausea, weight loss, or dark-colored urine
History of alcohol use with diabetes, obesity, or hepatitis
